History

A historic vintage, the Banyuls Traditionnel 1945 marks the revival of the vineyard and its people after World War II. On the steep schist slopes, swept by the Tramontane winds and plunging toward the Mediterranean, the winemakers of the Cave de l’Étoile (founded in 1921) crafted this oxidative natural sweet wine, now a true collector’s item. At nearly 80 years old, it symbolizes both a cultural heritage and a unique oenological legacy.

Vinification

Made predominantly from Grenache Noir, complemented by Grenache Gris and Carignan, this Banyuls was vinified in the purest tradition: hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed grapes, mutage on the fermenting must to preserve some natural sugars, prolonged maceration, then vertical pressing. Its oxidative aging in old oak casks and century-old barrels extended over several decades, shaping a wine of incomparable aromatic intensity.

Tasting Notes

The deep, tile-toned robe precedes a profound nose of walnuts, dried fruits, leather, coffee, and noble rancio. On the palate, richness and power merge with rare elegance, leading to a long, harmonious finish that reflects the grandeur of this post-war vintage. A historic wine, the Banyuls 1945 is best savored on its own to fully appreciate its depth, or paired with exceptional dishes such as aged Roquefort, roasted game birds, or a dark chocolate dessert.
