Between Beaune and Paris, in the north of Burgundy, Chablis is one of the most recognised white wine appellations in the world, with its Chardonnay of unique minerality linked to the Kimmeridgian soils. Domaine Alain Geoffroy, established in Beine since the 1850s, is one of its most faithful guardians: a family estate of around 50 hectares that produces honest, upright, and fruity Chablis in absolute respect for the terroir.
History / Heritage
Domaine Alain Geoffroy established itself in the Chablis vineyard in the 1850s. From generation to generation, the house has maintained its family character and its fidelity to the terroir. Today run by Alain Geoffroy and his successors, the estate covers around fifty hectares and spans the entire quality pyramid of the appellation: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Vieilles Vignes, and several Premiers Crus (Beauroy, Vau Ligneau, Fourchaume), as well as a parcel of Grand Cru Les Clos.
The Terroir
The Alain Geoffroy vineyard is entirely planted on Kimmeridgian soils: a compact sedimentary rock from the Jurassic era, composed of limestone and clay, scattered with small fossilised oysters of the genus Exogyra virgula. It is this unique substrate that gives Chablis its characteristic minerality, its acidic tension, and its very particular aromas of iodine and flint. The Beauroy and Fourchaume Premiers Crus, on fully south-facing slopes, benefit from maximum sunshine that brings roundness and complexity while preserving the freshness typical of Chablis. The vines are between 20 and 45 years old, depending on the parcel.
Viticulture and Winemaking
Viticulture is conducted in keeping with tradition and terroir typicity. Harvests are manual for the top-of-the-range cuvées. In the cellar, vinification is traditional in temperature-controlled tanks: Alain Geoffroy's Chablis undergo no oak ageing, which allows them to preserve all the freshness and minerality of the Kimmeridgian. Ageing takes place in tanks on fine lees, with regular stirring (bâtonnage) to add body and roundness without altering the precision. The vine and corkscrew museum present on the estate illustrates the family's deep attachment to their winemaking heritage.
Wines / Key Cuvées
The Alain Geoffroy Chablis is the heart of the range: pale gold with green highlights, a nose of lemon, white flowers, and wet stone, a taut and mineral palate with a beautiful, fresh length. The Chablis Premier Cru Beauroy, from 30–45 year-old vines on full-south Kimmeridgian, is broader and more unctuous, with notes of pear and brioche, without losing its acidic rectitude. The Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume, one of the most renowned premiers crus of the appellation, is the estate's flagship: generous, floral, and brioche-like, with a long, silky finish. The Grand Cru Les Clos, in confidential production, is the prestige cuvée, capable of ageing ten years or more.
Alain Geoffroy represents what Chablis has that is most authentic: the precision of a unique terroir, translated directly into wines that never deceive.
