M.A.N. Family Wines

Three friends, a tractor shed, and 300 cases: that is how M.A.N. Family Wines came to life in 2001 in the Paarl region, at the heart of South Africa's Coastal Region. This estate embodies a liberated South African wine culture, one of winemakers who prefer to let the terroir speak rather than the labels. Code name: the initials of the three founders' wives. Philosophy: to produce wines they would be the first to want to buy.

History / Heritage

It was in 2001 that José Conde and brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh decided, to the surprise of their respective wives, that they "would no longer be home much on weekends." Together, they bottled their first cuvées in a barn, with the means at hand: manual harvests, small-lot fermentations, and no safety net. M.A.N. takes its initials from Marie, Annette, and Nicky, the three wives whose patience made it all possible. Since then, the estate has crossed borders: 175,000 cases produced annually, a presence in 25 countries, and wines regularly cited by the Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast. The structure remains that of a mini-cooperative, with around thirty partner winegrowers, all engaged in certified sustainability programmes (IPW and WIETA).

The Terroir

M.A.N.'s grapes come primarily from the zones of Agter-Paarl, Malmesbury, and Durbanville, three appellations within the Coastal Region benefiting from a marked maritime influence. Atlantic breezes temper the summers, while the decomposed granite soils, low in fertility but with high water retention, push the vines to draw deep from the ground. The result: 80% of the vines grow without irrigation despite low rainfall. The cultivated grape varieties reflect South Africa's two faces: Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, typically South African, alongside Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah.

Viticulture and Winemaking

M.A.N.'s approach is firmly oriented towards considered sustainability. All partner winegrowers are certified IPW (Integrated Production of Wine), a label governing phytosanitary practices, water use, and environmental impact. In the cellar, cellarmaster Riaan Möller prioritises the preservation of each variety's natural character: for the Chenin Blanc, for example, only free-run juice is used, in order to retain the bright acidity and tropical fruit aromas. Ageing is calibrated to the cuvée: stainless steel for fruity whites, French oak barrels for the age-worthy reds.

Wines / Key Cuvées

The M.A.N. Chenin Blanc is undoubtedly the estate's emblematic cuvée. One hundred percent free-run juice, it delivers fresh acidity, citrus and tropical fruit aromas, and a remarkable palate persistence for its price,  which is precisely M.A.N.'s mission: wines of immediate pleasure, without artifice. The Pinotage "Bosstok" is the range's other pillar. From a grape variety born in South Africa in 1925,  a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, it offers aromas of red fruits, a hint of cinnamon, and supple tannins, ideal at the table or as an aperitif. Also worth noting is the Syrah (known as Shiraz in South Africa), more structured, and well suited to a little time in the cellar.

M.A.N. Family Wines is a reminder that the best wine is not necessarily the most expensive, but the one you share with pleasure. A lesson in humility, signed Paarl.
