Châteauneuf-du-Pape: 18 grape varieties for a legendary wine

The 18 Grape Varieties of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: A Unique Richness in France

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is much more than just a great name from the Rhône Valley. It's also a legendary appellation that authorizes no fewer than 18 different grape varieties, red and white combined — an almost unique case in France, and even in the world.

A Mosaic of Grape Varieties for Blended Wine

Unlike other appellations that rely on 1 or 2 grape varieties, Châteauneuf-du-Pape proudly claims its complexity. Historically, winemakers used all the grape varieties at their disposal to balance power, freshness, and aromas. Even today, although most wines are built around the trio Grenache – Syrah – Mourvèdre, each estate is free to compose its own score.

Here are the 18 authorized grape varieties:

  • Reds: Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Counoise, Muscardin, Terret Noir, Vaccarèse, Picpoul Noir.
  • Whites: Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Picpoul Blanc, Picardan.
  • Gray varieties: Clairette Rose, Grenache Gris, Picpoul Gris.

Why So Many Grape Varieties?

This is the DNA of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: an exceptional diversity of soils (rolled pebbles, sands, limestone) and a dry Mediterranean climate, swept by the mistral wind. This diversity of terroirs naturally calls for a diversity of grape plantings, with each variety bringing its own contribution to the structure, according to the desired wine style, but also in terms of color, texture, or acid balance. It is even permitted - and common - to combine white grapes with reds in the same red wine, to bring freshness or aromatic complexity.

Some Examples:

  • Grenache (black and white): present in nearly two-thirds of wines produced, brings roundness, fruitiness, and warmth.
  • Syrah: structure, color, spices, and aging potential.
  • Mourvèdre: intensity, tannins, and aromatic complexity over time.
  • Cinsault and Counoise: finesse, freshness, and crisp fruit.
  • Roussanne and Bourboulenc: tension, finesse, and elegance in whites.
  • Muscardin, Terret Noir, or Vaccarèse: rarer varieties that bring floral or spicy touches that refine the wine's profile.

Sometimes you'll find co-planted vineyards, where several grape varieties are planted side by side in the same plot. This historical practice, still preserved in certain estates, allows for joint harvesting and vinification. It promotes a very natural and harmonious expression of the terroir, while representing an asset in the face of climate change: by diversifying maturity dates and sensitivities to water stress, winemakers can better cope with climatic uncertainties while maintaining the stylistic coherence of their wines.

Others prefer to vinify each grape variety separately to better refine the final balance in blending.

Beyond the classic GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre), we see more varied styles emerging: some blends highlight Counoise or Cinsault to lighten structures, while whites combining Clairette, Roussanne, Picpoul, and Grenache blanc offer rich but balanced cuvées.
