Barossa Valley: Shiraz, old vines and exceptional red wines
Barossa, the Valley of Great Shiraz and Australia's Best Red Wines
Welcome to the Barossa Valley, the beating heart of Australian red wine. Just an hour from Adelaide, this sunny valley in South Australia is a must-visit for anyone interested in the great wines of the New World. Between ochre hills, eucalyptus trees, and century-old vines, it embodies a generous, intense style... and irresistibly Australian.
Iconic Terroir of Shiraz... But Not Only
If there's one grape variety that embodies Barossa, it's Shiraz. Here, hot summers, cool nights, and varied soils (clay, shale, red sand) give birth to powerful but balanced reds. In certain areas like Marananga, old ungrafted vines produce concentrated, expressive grapes. Black fruits, pepper, cocoa, black olive... the aromas explode with intensity.
Some of the region's best reds benefit from oak barrel aging, often American, which brings texture, toasty or spicy notes, without ever smothering the fruit.
But Barossa is not just about Shiraz. There are also excellent GSM blends (Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro – the other name for Mourvèdre), full of freshness and spices. Cabernet Sauvignon, often generous and structured, completes this very expressive red landscape.
On the white wine side, Barossa also hides some gems. Riesling, especially in Eden Valley, produces sharp and floral wines, perfect for lovers of vivacity. Semillon, sometimes barrel-aged, offers a more textured and slightly patinated style, capable of aging beautifully. And Chardonnay, more confidential, seduces with its roundness and notes of ripe fruits or brioche.
🏺 Did You Know? The Old Vine Charter, a Living Treasure
The Barossa Valley is home to some of the oldest vines in the world still in production, sometimes planted as early as the 1840s. To protect this exceptional heritage, the region has implemented the Old Vine Charter:
- Old Vine: 35 years and older
- Survivor Vine: 70 years and older
- Centenarian Vine: 100 years and older
- Ancestor Vine: 125 years and older
A rare initiative that values the age of vines and their essential role in the typicity of wines. A true local pride... and an asset in your glass.
Our Two 100% Barossa Favorites
Bruno Shiraz 2021 – Marananga, Barossa Valley A stylish, no-nonsense red. Bruno is a modern Shiraz, vinified with precision to combine generosity and freshness. From four plots located in Marananga, it explodes on the nose with notes of blackberry, plum, clove, and anise. The palate is ample, juicy, with a tangy finish and fine tannins. A passage in American oak barrels brings texture and complexity, without masking the fruit. And all, at a very sweet price.
Rockbare RB1 Shiraz 2018 – Barossa Valley More concentrated, more intense, this RB1 is a tribute to the richness of the terroir. Aromas of black cherry, olive, dark chocolate, sweet spices... This full-bodied Shiraz seduces with its silky texture and spicy finish. Crafted from Rockbare's best plots, this wine has convinced the experts (94 pts James Halliday, 95 pts Wine Orbit). Ideal with roasted meat, a sauced dish, or a well-aged cheese.
