Shaw + Smith Shiraz 2022 is one of Australia's most iconic cool-climate red wines and the definitive benchmark of the Adelaide Hills. Crafted since 2002, this 100% Shiraz is sourced from a meticulous selection of hand-harvested grapes in the Balhannah (340 to 380m) and Lenswood (455 to 500m) vineyards, which feature sandy loam and quartz soils. The winemaking incorporates a partial inclusion of whole bunches to add spice and complexity. The wine is then aged for 10 months in French oak barrels (puncheons and barriques, 20% new), followed by 16 months of bottle aging before release.
Hailing from a cool vintage shaped by La Niña, this vibrant and elegant wine reveals a complex bouquet on the nose of blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry, plum, herbs, and flowers, enhanced by notes of licorice, clove, white pepper, and a subtle touch of pencil lead. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and perfectly balanced, driven by tight, silky tannins, leading into a fresh and long finish.
Ideal to enjoy with meat in sauce, lamb, venison, or Roquefort cheese. Aging potential until 2033.

Although less well known than Mendoza, San Juan stands out among Argentina's great vineyards. The winemakers of San Juan produce wines of great personality, with Syrah as the flagship grape variety, giving intense, spicy reds. Excellent Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are also found here, reflecting the arid, sun-drenched terroir. Thanks to the altitude and temperature variations, the grapes develop good concentration and fresh acidity, making for well-balanced, long-keeping wines. I really liked this Shiraz as the tannins are moderate and well-integrated. Notes of dark fruits and spices with a lovely fresh finish. A balanced wine to pair with Mediterranean cuisine.
