History
With the 2014 Adrien Cazes cuvée, Bruno Cazes pays tribute to the new generation of this historic house, founded in 1895. The estate, a pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture in Roussillon, works with old vines over 40 years old, rooted on schistous hills overlooking the Mediterranean. This steep, sun-drenched terroir produces exceptional Banyuls Grand Cru, natural sweet wines with international prestige.
Vinification
Composed of 80% Grenache Noir and 20% Grenache Gris, this Banyuls Grand Cru is produced according to the strictest rules of the appellation. The grapes are destemmed and crushed, then undergo a three-week maceration with remontage, followed by traditional mutage. Micro-oxidative aging in oak casks lasts several years, giving this vintage greater depth compared to the 2015.
Tasting Notes
Its dark mahogany-hued color announces a complex nose: dried fruits, nuts, brandied prunes, with an elegant oxidative evolution. On the palate, the texture is broad and velvety, balancing richness with freshness. Perfect with blue cheese, a 10–12 month-aged Comté, or as a digestif with chocolate-covered orange peel.
France
Between sea and mountain, the vines of Banyuls, an AOC since 1936, cling to schist slopes that plunge down to the Mediterranean. This spectacular setting, bathed in sun and wind, shapes generous, intense vins doux naturels. The appellation mainly produces reds from Grenache Noir, completed by Grenache Gris and Blanc, as well as amber, tawny and rosé versions.
Banyuls comes in several styles. Banyuls Rimage, made and aged away from air, shows all the freshness of the fruit, with aromas of cherry, blackberry or blackcurrant, sometimes with a touch of chocolate. Approachable young, it shines with dark chocolate, fruit desserts and some blue cheeses. By contrast, Banyuls Traditionnel and Grand Cru go through long oxidative ageing in cask or glass demijohn, developing complex notes of walnut, coffee, spice and rancio. The Grands Crus, from old vines and aged for at least 30 months, stand out for their depth and great ageing potential.
Ce Banyuls Grand Cru se marie idéalement avec des desserts au chocolat noir, des fromages bleus ou un comté affiné de 10 à 12 mois. Il peut également être dégusté en digestif, accompagné de fruits secs ou de chocolat.
Nine years of age have given this Banyuls extraordinary complexity. Notes of prune, espresso, and orange peel wrapped in silky tannins and refined sweetness. A fortified masterpiece.
Rich aromas of dried fig, cocoa, and roasted nuts unfold into a luscious palate of dark berries, toffee, and spice. Smooth, warming, and incredibly persistent. A dessert in itself.
Anne-Sarine - Local Nose
I was touched by the emotion this wine conveys. Plum, cocoa, fig... it's intense and enveloping.
