Tyrrell's Hunter Valley Semillon 2024 comes from the union of this iconic Hunter Valley estate, rich with 160 years of winemaking tradition, and its signature white grape variety. Today managed by Bruce Tyrrell (fourth generation) and his children Jane, John, and Chris, the property operates an exceptional 108-hectare vineyard that is home to 7 of the region's 11 oldest ungrafted plots. For this cuvée, the grapes are sourced from the valley's finest Semillon plots, mostly dry-grown and approximately 40 years old, thriving on well-drained soils under a warm and sunny climate. The wine features 10.5% alcohol.
On the nose, the wine is highly expressive, luminous, and of rare purity. It displays a bouquet dominated by vivid citrus (lemon, lime) and white melon, complemented by delicate floral touches. On the palate, this Australian dry white proves to be straight, crystalline, and precise. Medium-bodied but with marked intensity, it is driven by a lively, chiseled acidity and a clean texture, extending into a long, taut, refreshing, and saline finish.
Delicious and vibrant in its youth, this great Semillon possesses an evolution potential of 10 to 15 years, during which it will develop toasted aromas and exceptional complexity. It is the ideal pairing as an aperitif, or with oysters, ceviche, seafood, or light Asian cuisine.
Australia
The Hunter Valley is the flagship wine region of New South Wales and one of the oldest in Australia. It is here that the story of Australian wine began in the 19th century—and where a unique winemaking tradition continues to thrive. The region is especially renowned for two iconic styles: oak-aged Chardonnay and dry, vibrant, and taut Semillon.
The latter, produced since the 1870s, is considered the purest expression of the grape variety in the New World. The best Hunter Valley Semillons, such as those from Tyrrell’s, are known for their crystalline freshness in their youth and their remarkable ageing potential, developing notes of honey, toast, and beeswax over time.
