Bouchard Finlayson

Deep in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, "heaven and earth" in Afrikaans, a few kilometres from the seaside town of Hermanus, Bouchard Finlayson has established itself as one of the absolute references for South African Pinot Noir. Founded in 1989 on a handful of virgin hectares, this boutique estate combines Burgundian rigour with the light of the Cape. Its 25 hectares of vines, set within 125 hectares of which the majority remains as fynbos nature reserve, produce cuvées of rare finesse for the southern hemisphere.

History / Heritage

The estate was born from a singular meeting: that of Paul Bouchard, a recognised Burgundian winegrower, and Peter Finlayson, a South African pioneer of Pinot Noir. Together in 1989, they planted the first vines according to Burgundian principles on still-virgin land. The collaboration gave its name to the estate and its identity to its wines. In 2000, the Tollman family, passionate about the African continent, acquired the property and entrusted the winemaking to Chris Albrecht, who still holds that role today. More than thirty years of continuous work have forged a worldwide reputation. Recently, the estate has embarked on an ambitious architectural transformation, while maintaining its presence through a pop-up tasting in Hermanus.

The Terroir

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, enclosed between the mountains and Walker Bay, enjoys an exceptional maritime climate: the Benguela Current, arriving from the South Atlantic, brings freshness and humidity, limiting summer heat excesses. The surrounding peaks trap morning mists and cool air, ensuring slow ripening and preserved natural acidity. The soils are Bokkeveld-type clay-schists, rich in gravel, a subsoil that drains well and forces roots to go deep. All of this favours the production of elegant wines, in the style of Burgundy, to which the estate's wines are regularly compared.

Viticulture and Winemaking

The vines were planted and managed according to Burgundian principles, with particular attention to row orientation and planting density. The winemaking is meticulous: Chris Albrecht selects barrel by barrel to assemble the great cuvées, in a process of constant evolution. The ageing combines French oak barrels and, for the Missionvale Chardonnay, terracotta amphoras, an innovation reflecting the estate's permanent openness to new techniques without denying its heritage.

Wines / Key Cuvées

The Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir is the pinnacle of the range: produced only in the finest vintages, this cuvée assembles the best barrels of the year into a wine that is both exuberant in youth and capable of ageing with grace. Cherry, undergrowth, floral notes, and a silky texture, it is one of the most accomplished Pinot Noirs produced outside Burgundy. The Missionvale Chardonnay, for its part, expresses all the minerality of the Hemel-en-Aarde terroir: citrus zest, calcareous tension, and a well-integrated richness born of ageing in barrels and amphoras. Finally, Hannibal is the estate's most daring red blend, a Mediterranean assemblage of Sangiovese, Mourvèdre, Pinot Noir, and Nebbiolo: spiced, fleshy, and very personal.

Bouchard Finlayson embodies the very best that South Africa has to offer: a European vision nourished by a unique African terroir, and wines that imitate no one.
