Banyuls Traditionnel 1951, L'Etoile

🇫🇷 AOP Banyuls | Roussillon  | France

History

The Banyuls Traditionnel 1951 is a true oenological relic. Born on the steep schist terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, it reflects the heroic viticulture of Banyuls and the ancestral expertise of the Cave de l’Étoile, the oldest cooperative of the cru since 1921. With over 70 years of age, this rare vintage is a living testament to the tradition of great sweet natural wines from the Roussillon.

Vinification

Made primarily from Grenache noir, complemented by Grenache gris and Carignan, this wine was crafted using traditional methods: hand-harvested grapes, destemmed, mutage on the skins to preserve natural sugars, long maceration, and pressing in a vertical press. The oxidative aging in old oak casks and century-old barrels has shaped a uniquely complex aromatic profile, enriched by time and the slow “angel’s share.”

Tasting Notes

Its deep, tawny-hued robe announces a refined nose of walnuts, coffee, leather, and dried fruits, enhanced by a noble and elegant rancio. On the palate, richness and silkiness are balanced with remarkable freshness, leading to a long, persistent finish. This 1951 is a rare meditation wine, ideal to enjoy on its own for its depth, or paired with an aged Comté, a strong Roquefort, or dark chocolate.
