Escarpment Chardonnay 2020 expresses the precise, mineral character of Martinborough through a Burgundy-inspired approach. The 2020 season offered favorable conditions for slow ripening while preserving freshness. Fermented and aged 11 months in French oak (20% new) with partial malolactic fermentation and lees stirring, it delivers texture, volume, and complexity.
The nose combines ripe stone fruit, citrus, subtle buttery notes, and a flint-like mineral touch. The palate is broad, supple, and textured, with a precise, balanced mineral spine. The finish is long and fresh. Recommended with roasted turbot in hollandaise or free-range chicken in a light cream sauce.
New Zealand
Wairarapa, whose Māori name means "glistening waters", is a compact and understated region nestled in the southern tip of the North Island, just over an hour's drive from Wellington. Identified as early as the late 1970s as climatically similar to Burgundy, its free-draining gravel terraces and cool, dry climate have given rise to some of the most sought-after Pinot Noirs in New Zealand. Its three subregions, Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton, share a common foundation while offering subtle differences in character for the discerning palate to explore. Martinborough expressions lean toward elegance and finesse, with notes of red cherry, strawberry, dried herbs and earthy undertones that develop toward leather and forest floor complexity with age. A region that produces little, but produces exceptionally well, resolutely focused on quality over volume.
Jana - Local Nose
A beautifully structured Chardonnay, between Burgundian finesse and New Zealand minerality. The battonage brings volume without being heavy.
