Bodega Otronia

At the 45th parallel south, in the steppes of Sarmiento in the province of Chubut, Bodega Otronia lays claim to the title of the world's most southerly vineyard. Here, winds regularly exceed 100 km/h, frosts are a threat year-round, and rainfall borders on non-existent. And yet : Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs of crystalline precision are born from these 52 certified organic hectares, proving that the extreme can be a source of greatness.

History / Heritage

The Otronia project was born from the vision of Alejandro Bulgheroni, an Argentine entrepreneur who owns several estates around the world, including Bodega Garzón in Uruguay. In 2010, he entrusted winemaker Juan Pablo Murgia with the challenge of planting vines on a family property on the shores of Lake Musters, called "Otrón" by the indigenous peoples of the region. No one had ever attempted to grow vines here. The undertaking seemed mad. In 2024, Wine Enthusiast named Bodega Otronia in the "New World Winery of the Year" category. The rest belongs to history still being written.

The Terroir

Otronia manages two vineyards: Paico, with lacustrine soils, and Sierra Silva, with fluvial soils. The 52 hectares extend at 258 metres of altitude on the shores of Lake Musters. This extreme Patagonian terroir combines extreme diurnal temperature variation (up to 30°C between day and night), intense sunshine, and low humidity, conditions that push the vines to concentrate aromas and flavours into skins thickened by the wind. The grape varieties cultivated across these two sites are: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Torrontés, Riesling, Merlot, and Malbec.

Viticulture and Winemaking

Organic farming has been at the heart of the Otronia project from the very beginning. To combat the violent winds, the team has planted thousands of trees as windbreaks and installed protective netting. Once sheltered, the wind becomes an ally: it naturally dries the grape clusters and prevents any fungal disease. Harvest is early,  sometimes among the earliest in Argentina, to preserve the natural acidity that the cold climate maintains. In the cellar, Juan Pablo Murgia works with precision and minimal intervention, seeking to render the terroir's imprint in every cuvée.

Wines / Key Cuvées

The Otronia Pinot Noir is the wine that put the estate on the global map: light in colour, aromatically intense, with wild strawberry, cherry, truffle, and wildflowers, and fine tannins and a bracing acidity reminiscent of great Burgundies from the Côte de Nuits. The Chardonnay, vinified in oak, is of a precise tension, citrus and white peach on a saline mineral base. As for the white blend "Patagonia Extrema" (Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris), it is flamboyant on the nose, dry and fresh on the palate, ideal alongside aromatic Asian cuisine.

Otronia is a demonstration that where viticulture seems impossible, viticulture can be sublime. The extreme as terroir.
