Weingut Markus Huber

In Reichersdorf, within the small Traisental appellation at the heart of Lower Austria, Markus Huber has established himself in just a few years as the undisputed reference of his region. His Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings, from unique calcareous conglomerate soils, are distributed in more than 35 countries and regularly scored between 94 and 100 points by the leading international publications. He is one of those winemakers who prove that an under-the-radar terroir can produce wines of world-class calibre.

History / Heritage

Born in 1979, Markus Huber is what Austrian wine circles call a "Shooting Star" — a young winemaker who climbs the ranks at a remarkable pace. In 2003, he won the Salon (the Austrian equivalent of the Meursault competition) for his Grüner Veltliner. Four victories at the Falstaff Grüner Veltliner Grand Prix followed, along with a gold medal at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition (best white wine producer), and a nomination as James Suckling's Man of the Year after placing two wines in the global top 20, including a Riesling Ried Berg scoring 100 points. Since then, the estate has been regarded as the Leitbetrieb (benchmark estate) of the Traisental.

The Terroir

The Traisental is an Austrian DAC appellation created in 1995, one of the country's smallest and youngest, with approximately 790 hectares of vines in total. Its singularity lies in its calcareous conglomerate soils, a compacted sedimentary rock rich in limestone, clay, and pebbles, which lend the wines a crystalline minerality and characteristic salinity. Markus Huber farms around 50 hectares across parcels with vines ranging from 5 to 80 years old. Grüner Veltliner accounts for more than two-thirds of production, followed by Riesling.

Viticulture and Winemaking

A member of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (OTW), Markus Huber is certified as a "Nachhaltiges Weingut" (sustainable estate). In the cellar, he adapts ageing to the desired style: the fresh, everyday varietal wines (Terrassen range) ferment and age in stainless steel to preserve freshness and aromatics. The top single-vineyard cuvées (Ried Berg, Ried Zwirch, classified 1ÖTW, the Austrian equivalent of premier crus) are vinified and aged in large oak casks, allowing slow integration without imparting oak character. Markus Huber's analytical precision is entirely in service of terroir expression.

Wines / Key Cuvées

The Grüner Veltliner Terrassen is the ideal entry point into the Huber universe: white pepper, pear, mineral grip, all lightness and length. The Grüner Veltliner Ried Zwirch 1ÖTW is of a different order, denser, more complex, with a saline finish that gives it great versatility at the table. Finally, the Riesling Ried Berg, awarded 100 points by James Suckling, is a wine built for long ageing, combining orange zest, dried apricot, and a calcareous tension that persists for years.

Markus Huber is proof that a confidential appellation can produce wines of world stature, provided a talented winemaker devotes all his energy to it.
