History

The Banyuls Traditionnel 1947 is a monument over 75 years old, a testament to ancestral know-how and the heroic vineyards of Banyuls, clinging to the steep schist slopes overlooking the Mediterranean. Preserved by the Cave de l’Étoile, the oldest cooperative in the region, founded in 1921, this rare bottle illustrates the endurance and nobility of the great oxidative sweet wines of Roussillon.

Vinification

Made from primarily Grenache noir, complemented by Grenache gris and Carignan, this natural sweet wine follows the traditional method: hand-harvested, destemmed, fermented on the skins with mutage to preserve natural sugars, followed by prolonged maceration and vertical pressing. Oxidative aging in old casks and century-old barrels over several decades gradually developed an aromatic profile of unique richness.

Tasting

Its tile-to-mahogany colored robe announces an intense bouquet of walnut, leather, cocoa, mocha, and dried figs, enhanced by a noble rancio of rare elegance. The palate is ample and silky, captivating with its depth, balance, and a long, persistent finish. A true wine for contemplation, this Banyuls 1947 stands as an essential collector’s piece, perfect to enjoy on its own or with intense dark chocolate and aged cheeses.
