Tabali Pedrogoso Gran Reserva Viognier 2023 comes from the Limarí Valley, close to the Pacific Ocean, on alluvial soils rich in limestone. This Viognier precisely expresses the unique identity of this Chilean terroir, driven by a cool, windy climate that favors aromatic intensity and mineral freshness. Established in 2002 in Limarí, at the edge of the Atacama Desert, Tabalí is a pioneer of viticulture in this valley. The estate crafts wines spanning Chile from east to west within the same valley, from its high-altitude Roca Madre vineyard in the Andes to the coastal Talinay vineyards near the Pacific Ocean. The range is crafted by winemaker Felipe Müller and viticulturist Hector Rojas.
On the nose, it reveals intense floral aromas, along with white flowers, peach, apricot, and the characteristic spicy notes of Viognier. On the palate, it is full-bodied, ample, and generous, supported by a lovely freshness and beautiful tension, leading into a long, aromatic finish.
Chile
Coquimbo is the northernmost wine area in Chile, with barely 2,000 hectares of vines. What the region lacks in size, it more than makes up for in character and individuality. Its three subregions, Limarí, Elqui and Choapa, offer a remarkable diversity of terroirs.
In the Limarí Valley, where vines have been grown for over 400 years, limestone soils, low rainfall and a morning sea fog regularly followed by a warm, sunny afternoon give the wines a rare and distinctive minerality. Further north, the Elqui Valley, at the gateway to the Atacama Desert, produces bright, intensely aromatic wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, where the secret to successful viticulture lies in altitude. The vineyards receive far higher levels of sunlight than any European wine region, which shows in the vibrancy and intensity of the wines.
From the saline minerality of Limarí whites to the sunny, concentrated reds of Elqui, Coquimbo stands out as one of the most fascinating wine regions of the New World: confidential, demanding and truly singular.
