DESCRIPTION

History

Produced by the century-old Vignerons de Maury cooperative, this 1983 vintage has matured patiently for over forty years. It illustrates the unique ability of Maury’s natural sweet wines to withstand the test of time and transform into true sensory treasures.

Vinification

Predominantly Grenache Noir, mutaged on the grapes to preserve natural sugars. Oxidative aging in casks and old barrels encourages the development of complex rancio notes.

Tasting Notes

Mahogany-brown robe. Powerful nose of candied fruits, oriental spices, and roasted coffee. The palate is broad and warm, combining prune, walnut, and gingerbread flavors. The persistent and vibrant finish reveals the full nobility of oxidative aging. Best enjoyed with aged Comté or a caramelized walnut tart.

In the heart of Roussillon, the Maury appellation spreads over black schist slopes that hold the heat of the sun and give Grenache Noir its ideal terroir. Alongside this leading grape, Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc complete the mix. This mineral, luminous setting gives powerful, expressive vins doux naturels, mostly red, but also amber or tawny. Maury comes in several styles. Maury Grenat (or young Maury) shows generous fruit, with intense notes of cherry and blackberry. Maury Traditionnel and Vieux Maury are aged oxidatively, revealing aromas of cocoa, fig, coffee and elegant rancio. Old vintages, sometimes kept for decades in cask, are especially sought after: they combine depth, complexity and an astonishing freshness that defies time.
