Hungary is definitely an underdog in the European wine scene, and that just ain’t right - Hungarian wines used to be on top one hundred years ago. Tokaji, anyone? Whether you’re looking for dry or sweet, aromatic and spicy or fruity and fresh, Hungary’s got it. With an oenological history stretching back to the Roman era, these wines are sure to leave you 'Hungary' for more! The puns may be bad, but the wine is good.
It's impossible to talk about Hungarian wines without mentioning Tokaji Aszú, this sweet marvel produced in the Tokaj region. Its particularity? A unique system based on puttonyos, which measure the quantity of botrytized grapes added to the must. The higher the number of puttonyos, the more concentrated and rich in sugar the wine is. The scale ranges from 3 to 6 puttonyos, with the richest wines reaching exceptional sweetness. Beyond this, there is Tokaji Eszencia, produced with the pure juice of botrytized berries, reaching the pinnacle in terms of sweetness and complexity.
As with Sauternes wines, this aromatic richness is due to noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), a fungus that dehydrates the grapes, thus concentrating the sugars and aromas. This phenomenon, combined with Tokaj's unique climate, gives birth to wines of incredible complexity and longevity.
While Furmint shines in Tokaji, it also produces remarkable dry white wines. This grape variety offers sharp acidity, marked minerality, and a good aging capacity. The non-sweet versions often reveal aromas of green apple, pear, and hazelnut, with a tension reminiscent of certain great Rieslings. As it ages, Furmint develops more complex notes of honey, almond, and flint, making it an excellent wine for gastronomy.
Beyond Furmint, Hungary houses a fascinating ampelographic richness. Among the local grape varieties that deserve attention:
Hárslevelű: often associated with Tokaji, it brings roundness and floral notes to blends.
Juhfark: mainly cultivated in Somló, this grape variety offers nervous and mineral whites, perfect for lovers of tension and complexity.
Olaszrizling: despite its name evoking Riesling, it is a distinct grape variety that gives fresh and fruity wines, perfect for summer consumption.
Királyleányka: a grape variety with floral and fruity aromas, sometimes reminiscent of Muscat.
Hungary has more than just Tokaji! Many wine regions produce high-level dry white wines. Among them:
Tokaj: of course, dry Furmint reigns here, with elegant and mineral wines.
Somló: a volcanic micro-region that produces powerful whites, built for aging.
Eger: famous for its Egri Bikavér red wine, but which also produces excellent whites based on Leányka and Hárslevelű.
Balaton: around the famous lake, fresh and fruity wines are found, perfect for summer.
While it's true that Hungary excels in whites, its red wines are not to be outdone! Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Kadarka, and even Cabernet Franc find unique expressions here, often marked by a beautiful freshness and an elegant tannic structure.
Hungary is full of wine gems just waiting to be explored. Between chiseled dry whites, mythical sweet wines, and elegant reds, this country has what it takes to seduce all wine lovers.
