Introduction to the Saint-Véran AOC
The Saint-Véran Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), created in 1971, is located in southern Burgundy, in the Mâconnais region. It is recognized for its white wines made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety. Spread over a little more than 700 hectares, it encompasses 7 wine-producing villages and is divided into two distinct areas, separated by the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. Thanks to its clay-limestone and marly soils, Saint-Véran wines offer beautiful freshness, pronounced minerality, and a rich aromatic palette. Although the appellation does not yet have Premier Crus, certain climats are particularly renowned for their quality.
Where is the Saint-Véran AOC located?
The appellation is situated in southern Burgundy, within the Mâconnais, near Pouilly-Fuissé, and not far from Beaujolais.
What is the grape variety of Saint-Véran?
Saint-Véran is made from Chardonnay, the emblematic grape variety of Burgundy.
What is the terroir of Saint-Véran?
The Saint-Véran terroir consists of clay-limestone and marly soils, promoting mineral and elegant wines.
The AOC is divided into two distinct areas separated by the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation:
- Northern Part: Composed mainly of clay-limestone soils, it offers elegant wines with beautiful minerality.
- Southern Part: Here, the soils are more marly, bringing more richness and roundness to the wines.
What are the most renowned crus or climats of the appellation?
Among the most famous climats are Les Cras, Les Pommards, and Les Charmonds.
Is there a classification system in Saint-Véran?
Unlike some neighboring appellations, Saint-Véran does not yet have a classification of Premier or Grand Crus, but a process has been initiated with INAO to obtain a "Premier Cru" classification for certain climats.
Wine Characteristics
What does a Saint-Véran wine taste like?
Saint-Véran offers notes of citrus, white-fleshed fruits, and white flowers, with a beautiful mineral tension and a buttery touch on the palate.
What is the difference between a Saint-Véran and a Pouilly-Fuissé?
Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé are neighbors in the Mâconnais and produced from the same grape variety, Chardonnay. However, Pouilly-Fuissé benefits from a more varied and often sunnier terroir, giving more powerful and complex wines. Saint-Véran, on the other hand, is distinguished by greater freshness and a more accessible approach in terms of price.
Is Saint-Véran a dry or sweet white wine?
It is a dry white wine, often lively and elegant, with a beautiful expression of the terroir.
Are there red Saint-Véran wines?
No, the appellation produces only white wines. For a red from the same region, you need to look to neighboring appellations like Mâcon or the Beaujolais Crus.
What is the price of a Saint-Véran?
The price of a Saint-Véran generally varies between 15 and 35 euros depending on the producer, vintage, and terroir. Some more prestigious cuvées can reach higher prices. This appellation remains generally very accessible compared to other better-known Burgundy appellations.
