DESCRIPTION
REGION
Tuscany
Italy
Tuscany is the third most planted region in Italy (after Sicily and Puglia) but ranks eighth in production, reflecting both the poor Tuscan soils and deliberate efforts to limit yields and raise quality. After Piedmont and Veneto, Tuscany produces the third largest volume of DOC/DOCG wines. Over 80% of the region's output is red wine, with Sangiovese the most widely planted grape in Tuscany. Chianti, Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the Super Tuscans are the best known wines of Tuscany. Trebbiano is the main white grape of the region.
