The Story
Founded over a century ago in Lannepax, in the heart of Bas-Armagnac, Maison Baron Gaston Legrand embodies the noblest soul of Gascony. This 1950 vintage, hand-distilled and aged for nearly a century in oak barrels, bears witness to an unaltered expertise. Since 1998, the Lhéraud family has perpetuated this rare heritage, safeguarding a collection of historic vintages that make every bottle a true piece of history.
The Vinification
This Vieil Armagnac is made from the Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Baco Blanc grape varieties. Distilled at a low proof in a traditional still, it has aged extensively in oak barrels, allowing for progressive micro-oxygenation. This process has softened the alcohol, concentrated the aromas, and developed a unique aromatic complexity. The prolonged aging has imparted woody and vanilla notes, with subtle nuances of candied fruits and sweet spices, revealing the finesse and elegance typical of great Bas-Armagnacs.
The Tasting
The Vieil Armagnac Baron Gaston Legrand 1950 unveils a refined nose of dried fruits, prune, and caramel, enriched with delicate touches of cinnamon and honey. On the palate, the eau-de-vie is round, ample/full, and velvety, with a perfect harmony between sweetness and structure. The finish is long and persistent, revealing accents of noble rancio and old wood, a symbol of the exceptional patience and expertise of Maison Baron Gaston Legrand.
France
Gascony, a historic area of southwest France spanning the Gers, the Landes and Lot et Garonne, is the birthplace of Armagnac, the oldest brandy in France. This exceptional spirit, made since the 14th century, embodies the soul and tradition of a region with strong character.
Armagnac comes from three distinct appellation areas: Bas Armagnac, seen as the finest, with its sandy clay soils (sables fauves) that bring finesse and elegance; Ténarèze, whose clay and limestone soils produce powerful, structured armagnacs; and Haut Armagnac, with harder clay and limestone soils. These three terroirs sit on the Lannemezan alluvial fan, made of sand, clay and pebbles from the erosion of the Pyrenees, creating ideal conditions for exceptional brandies.
Traditionally distilled in a continuous still at low strength and aged for a long time in Gascon or Limousin oak casks, Armagnac develops a deep, harmonious aromatic range: plum, prune, candied fruit, walnut, vanilla, honey, sweet spice, tobacco and noble rancio. A land of character and authenticity, Gascony carries on an ancestral craft, producing expressive, elegant and nuanced armagnacs, true witnesses of time and Gascon tradition.
