Tabali Talinay Pai Pinot Noir 2020 comes from a very steep, north-facing 1.15-hectare parcel within the Talinay vineyard, planted in 2012 on its own roots at a very high density, on the estate's most limestone-rich soils. Located at an altitude of 150 m and 12 km from the Pacific, this cool coastal terroir benefits from constant sea breezes that promote slow ripening and great aromatic precision. The grapes, sourced from massal selections of Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, are hand-harvested and vinified with 40% whole clusters, indigenous yeasts, and cold maceration. Aged for 12 months in French oak. Established in 2002 in Limarí, on the edge of the Atacama Desert, Tabalí is a pioneer of viticulture in this valley. The estate crafts wines that span Chile from east to west within the same valley, from its high-altitude Roca Madre vineyard in the Andes to the coastal Talinay vineyards near the Pacific Ocean. The range is crafted by winemaker Felipe Muller and viticulturist Hector Rojas.
On the nose, notes of wild cherry, damp earth, undergrowth, red fruits, fine herbs, rose, sweet spices, and sandalwood. On the palate, a chalky, tense, and fresh profile, delicate texture, nuanced tannins, and a saline, austere, and elegant finish. It pairs well with roasted duckling served pink with roasted beetroot and sweet pepper sauce, or crispy sweetbreads with wild mushrooms. Aging potential of 10 years.

Coquimbo is the northernmost wine region in Chile, with barely 2,000 hectares of vineyards, yet what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character and singularity. Its three sub-regions, Limarí, Elqui and Choapa, offer a remarkable diversity of terroirs.
In the Limarí Valley, where vines have been cultivated for over 400 years, the limestone soils, low rainfall and a regular morning marine fog giving way to warm sunny afternoons all combine to give the wines a rare and distinctive minerality. Further north, the Elqui Valley, on the edge of the Atacama Desert, produces brilliant and intensely aromatic wines, particularly from Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, where the secret to successful viticulture at such extreme latitudes lies in altitude. The vineyards here receive levels of solar radiation far higher than any wine region in Europe, which translates directly into the vibrancy and intensity of the wines.
From the briny minerality of Limarí whites to the sun-drenched, concentrated reds of Elqui, Coquimbo stands out as one of the most fascinating wine regions in the New World, understated, uncompromising, and unmistakably its own.
