Tyrrell's Single Vineyard Old Hillside Shiraz 2023 comes from a historic vineyard located in Pokolbin within the Hunter Valley. The site is home to the famous Old Patch block planted in 1867, but this cuvée is sourced from younger vines, averaging 50 years of age. Planted on a steep, east-facing hillside and protected by the Brokenback Mountains. It features 13.5% ABV, pH 3.44, and 6.22 g/L total acidity. Aging potential of 10 to 15 years.
On the nose, bright red fruits, with notes of raspberry, cranberry, and a mineral dimension. On the palate, slender and pure, medium-bodied, driven by luminous red fruit, fine tannins, and a saline finish. Pairs well with grilled red meats or a roasted lamb with herbs.
Tyrrell's, with a 160-year winemaking tradition, is led by Bruce Tyrrell (fourth generation) and Jane, John, and Chris (fifth generation) in the Hunter Valley. Their exceptional 108-hectare vineyard is home to 7 of the region's 11 oldest ungrafted blocks.
Australia
The Hunter Valley is the flagship wine region of New South Wales and one of the oldest in Australia. It is here that the story of Australian wine began in the 19th century—and where a unique winemaking tradition continues to thrive. The region is especially renowned for two iconic styles: oak-aged Chardonnay and dry, vibrant, and taut Semillon.
The latter, produced since the 1870s, is considered the purest expression of the grape variety in the New World. The best Hunter Valley Semillons, such as those from Tyrrell’s, are known for their crystalline freshness in their youth and their remarkable ageing potential, developing notes of honey, toast, and beeswax over time.
