Banyuls Traditionnel 1977, L'Etoile

🇫🇷 AOP Banyuls | Roussillon  | France

History

Produced by the oldest cooperative cellar in Banyuls, founded in 1921, this 1977 vintage reflects the patient and exacting craftsmanship of the winemakers at L’Étoile. Aged for nearly 40 years under oxidative conditions in old oak barrels and demi-muids swept by the Tramontane wind, it perfectly illustrates the traditional style of the appellation, where the sea and mountains meet to create meditation wines of rare intensity.

Vinification

A blend dominated by Grenache Noir, complemented by Grenache Gris and Carignan from old vines grown on schist soils. Hand-harvested grapes, fortified (mutage) on the skins, followed by prolonged maceration before pressing. Long oxidative aging concentrated the aromas and developed the famous rancio, the hallmark of great Banyuls Traditionnels. Bottled in January 2016, it has retained remarkable depth.

Tasting Notes

Dark mahogany robe with copper highlights. Complex nose of roasted walnuts, dried figs, mocha, and aged leather, lifted by hints of gentle spices and gingerbread. On the palate, the balance between breadth and freshness is masterful: notes of dried fruits, bitter cocoa, coffee, and rancio unfold in an endless, warm finish. A perfect companion to dark chocolate desserts, a powerful blue cheese, or simply enjoyed on its own as a great collector’s wine.
