L’Oriental is a unique Collioure red. Grown on the schist soils of the Côte Vermeille, the grapes are hand-harvested at the same ripeness level as those used for Banyuls. However, there is no mutage (fortification) here: fermentation runs to completion, and the wine remains dry. The result is a sun-drenched red that retains great elegance despite its 15% alcohol content.
The blend brings together 90% Grenache Noir and 10% Carignan. The Grenache provides generosity and ripe fruit, while the Carignan adds structure and freshness. After destemming, the grapes macerate for 20 days, and the wine is then aged for 11 months in oak demi-muids before bottling.
The color is a deep purple. The nose opens with very ripe black fruits, pepper, and spices. On the palate, the substance is ample and concentrated, with a finish of black olive and licorice. A racy wine, to be served at around 16°C.
At the table, it pairs well with Southern cuisine: duck breast with figs, lamb tagine with prunes, or beef stew with black olive tapenade.
France
Between sea and mountain, the vines of Banyuls, an AOC since 1936, cling to schist slopes that plunge down to the Mediterranean. This spectacular setting, bathed in sun and wind, shapes generous, intense vins doux naturels. The appellation mainly produces reds from Grenache Noir, completed by Grenache Gris and Blanc, as well as amber, tawny and rosé versions.
Banyuls comes in several styles. Banyuls Rimage, made and aged away from air, shows all the freshness of the fruit, with aromas of cherry, blackberry or blackcurrant, sometimes with a touch of chocolate. Approachable young, it shines with dark chocolate, fruit desserts and some blue cheeses. By contrast, Banyuls Traditionnel and Grand Cru go through long oxidative ageing in cask or glass demijohn, developing complex notes of walnut, coffee, spice and rancio. The Grands Crus, from old vines and aged for at least 30 months, stand out for their depth and great ageing potential.

A Grenache harvested as ripe as a Banyuls but vinified dry: black fruits, pepper, and a finish of black olive; it is rich yet very elegant!
