Escarpment Kiwa Pinot Noir 2021 comes from the Kiwa vineyard, located on Te Muna Road, nine kilometers east of Martinborough, on alluvial and gravelly soils characteristic of the Martinborough terraces. Aging for 20 months in French oak barrels (35% new) brings it structure and complexity.
The nose offers aromas of bay leaf, green tea, and Chinese five-spice, complemented by a palette of red fruits. The palate is juicy and complex, combining elegance and remarkable persistence. Aging potential of 10 years. At the table, it pairs with venison chops with juniper berries.
New Zealand
Wairarapa, whose Māori name means "glistening waters", is a compact and understated region nestled in the southern tip of the North Island, just over an hour's drive from Wellington. Identified as early as the late 1970s as climatically similar to Burgundy, its free-draining gravel terraces and cool, dry climate have given rise to some of the most sought-after Pinot Noirs in New Zealand. Its three subregions, Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton, share a common foundation while offering subtle differences in character for the discerning palate to explore. Martinborough expressions lean toward elegance and finesse, with notes of red cherry, strawberry, dried herbs and earthy undertones that develop toward leather and forest floor complexity with age. A region that produces little, but produces exceptionally well, resolutely focused on quality over volume.
