Escarpment Te Rehua Pinot Noir 2021 reveals a unique fruit richness and robustness, while showcasing the dense tannic structure characteristic of Martinborough. Aged for 19 months in French oak barrels (42% new), this exceptional wine is sourced from the gravelly and alluvial soils of Wairarapa.
The nose offers aromas of black cherry, plum, and spices, enriched with classic notes of undergrowth and licorice. Its silky texture and powerful character give it a robust elegance. Aging potential of up to 15 years. Pairing with wild boar chops with prunes or game terrine with hazelnuts.
New Zealand
Wairarapa, whose Māori name means "glistening waters", is a compact and understated region nestled in the southern tip of the North Island, just over an hour's drive from Wellington. Identified as early as the late 1970s as climatically similar to Burgundy, its free-draining gravel terraces and cool, dry climate have given rise to some of the most sought-after Pinot Noirs in New Zealand. Its three subregions, Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton, share a common foundation while offering subtle differences in character for the discerning palate to explore. Martinborough expressions lean toward elegance and finesse, with notes of red cherry, strawberry, dried herbs and earthy undertones that develop toward leather and forest floor complexity with age. A region that produces little, but produces exceptionally well, resolutely focused on quality over volume.
