History
Founded around 1850, Domaine La Coume du Roy embodies six generations of family tradition in Maury, at the heart of the black schists of the Agly Valley. Renowned for its collection of rare old vintages, the estate is now run by Agnès and Jean-François Bachelet, guardians of a unique winegrowing heritage.
Vinification
Made primarily from Grenache Noir, this Maury Doré 1948 is crafted according to the traditional method of Vins Doux Naturels. After a long maceration, mutage preserved the grapes’ natural sweetness and aromatic richness. The wine then underwent extended oxidative aging in old oak casks and glass demijohns, developing great aromatic intensity and complexity.
Tasting Notes
Nearly 75 years of aging have given this wine a mahogany color with golden highlights. The nose opens with powerful notes of dried fruits, caramel, walnut, and roasted coffee, accented by a touch of noble rancio. The palate, broad and silky, reveals exceptional depth, balanced by a persistent finish. Perfect with seared foie gras and figs, a square of intense dark chocolate, a caramelized tarte Tatin, or aged Parmesan—for a rare and unforgettable experience.

In the heart of Roussillon, the Maury appellation spreads over black schist slopes that hold the heat of the sun and give Grenache Noir its ideal terroir. Alongside this leading grape, Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc complete the mix. This mineral, luminous setting gives powerful, expressive vins doux naturels, mostly red, but also amber or tawny. Maury comes in several styles. Maury Grenat (or young Maury) shows generous fruit, with intense notes of cherry and blackberry. Maury Traditionnel and Vieux Maury are aged oxidatively, revealing aromas of cocoa, fig, coffee and elegant rancio. Old vintages, sometimes kept for decades in cask, are especially sought after: they combine depth, complexity and an astonishing freshness that defies time.
