Found primarily in Italy, France, and Corsica, it increasingly appeals to white wine enthusiasts thanks to its unique character and ability to fully express the terroir
Maremma Toscana DOC Toscane, Italy
The exact origins of Vermentino remain subject to debate. Some wine historians suggest it originated from Spain, while others believe it traveled from the Middle East before permanently settling in the Mediterranean. Today, it is mainly cultivated in Italy, particularly in Sardinia where it is the king grape variety under the "Vermentino di Gallura DOCG"appellation. It is also found in Tuscany, Liguria, and Piedmont.
In France, it is primarily present in Corsica, where it is known as "Malvoisie de Corse". It also flourishes in Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence, notably under the "Côtes de Provence" appellation. Its adaptation to warm and sunny terroirs makes it an ideal grape variety for these regions.
Vermentino is a late-ripening grape variety that appreciates hot and dry climates, while maintaining nice acidity. It produces dry white wines, often very aromatic and with great freshness. Its typical aromas include notes of citrus (lemon, grapefruit), white fruits (peach, pear), as well as floral and herbaceous nuances (broom, fennel, thyme).
On the palate, it offers a beautiful liveliness, balanced by a slight roundness and a saline touch that often recalls its Mediterranean origin. Some wines made from Vermentino can also develop mineral and iodine notes, especially when grown near the sea.
Vermentino is a grape variety that fully expresses the particularities of the terroirs where it is grown. In Sardinia, for example, it produces powerful and structured wines, with aromas of ripe fruits and notes of bitter almond. Vermentino di Sardegna is one of the most emblematic wines of the island, appreciated for its richness and complexity.
In Corsica, Vermentino (locally called Malvoisie) produces lighter and more floral wines, with citrus notes and beautiful minerality. These wines perfectly reflect the insular and sunny character of Corsica.
In Provence, Vermentino is often blended with other grape varieties to produce fresh and fruity rosé or white wines. It brings a touch of freshness and complexity to the blends, while maintaining its Mediterranean identity.
While Vermentino is primarily associated with Italian and French wine, it is also beginning to establish itself in other wine regions of the world. In Australia, California, and even South Africa, winemakers are experimenting with this grape variety, seeking to reproduce the Mediterranean conditions that allow it to flourish. These new wines offer a different interpretation of Vermentino, while preserving its essential characteristics: freshness, complexity, and sunny aromas.
Thanks to its freshness and aromatic complexity, Vermentino is a versatile wine that pairs with many dishes. It perfectly accompanies seafood and grilled fish, such as sea bass or flambéed prawns. It also pairs very well with Mediterranean cuisine, like Niçoise salad, grilled vegetables, or dishes based on olive oil and aromatic herbs.
For cheese lovers, it can be enjoyed with fresh goat cheese or slightly aged soft cheeses. Finally, it can also be a beautiful option for a summer aperitif, served well chilled.
