History
The 1962 vintage embodies the soul of great oxidative Banyuls, born on the vertiginous black schist terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. Over 60 years of patience and expertise have shaped this rare bottle, preserved by the Cave de l’Étoile, the oldest cooperative in Banyuls, founded in 1921. A true witness to time, it reflects the dedication of the winemakers who cultivate this heroic vineyard, accessible only by stone walls and steep paths.
Vinification
Primarily composed of Grenache Noir, complemented by Grenache Gris and Carignan, this Banyuls was crafted following the traditional method of vins doux naturels: mutage on the skins after prolonged maceration, pressing in a vertical press, followed by long oxidative aging in old casks and century-old barrels. Decade after decade, slow oxidation enriched its structure and revealed unparalleled aromatic complexity.
Tasting Notes
The dark robe with copper highlights opens to an intense nose of dried fruits, walnut, prunes, and cocoa, enhanced by a noble rancio with leather and gentle spice notes. On the palate, the balance of roundness and freshness captivates: candied figs, mocha, honey, and saline hints extend into a long, vibrant finish. Best enjoyed as a meditation wine, with fine dark chocolate or a powerful blue cheese. A collector’s bottle, perfect for marking a special occasion.
