The History of the Tyrell Family

Tyrell’s Estate was founded in 1858 in the Hunter Valley region by Edward Tyrell. Today, it stands as one of the most iconic wineries in Australia. Over generations, the estate has become a pioneer in Australian winemaking, maintaining and cultivating a unique expertise that has earned their wines worldwide recognition.

Hunter Valley: Renowned Grapes and Wines

Hunter Valley, located about 150 kilometers north of Sydney, is Australia’s oldest wine region. Its subtropical climate, with hot and humid summers, creates ideal conditions for growing key grape varieties. The most famous is Sémillon, known for producing elegant, mineral-driven white wines that age remarkably well.

In addition to Sémillon, Hunter Valley also cultivates Shiraz, a red grape that produces fruity and spicy wines, often lighter than those from other Australian regions. The valley is also renowned for other varieties like Chardonnay, Verdelho, and Cabernet Sauvignon, which stand out due to the region's diverse terroirs.

Tyrell's Terroirs: From Sandy Soils to Clay-Limestone

Tyrell's Estate spans several vineyards, allowing the production of a wide range of wines while respecting the specific characteristics of each soil.

Among the notable terroirs is HVD Vineyard, famous for its historic Sémillon vines planted in 1908. Its sandy soil is ideal for producing mineral-rich white wines with great longevity.

Johnno’s Vineyard, situated on clay-limestone soil, is also dedicated to Sémillon and Shiraz, giving these grapes a refined structure and incredible finesse.

Stevens Vineyard, with its light, well-drained soils, produces exceptional Sémillon known for its freshness and aging potential.
