DESCRIPTION
The Saby family, winemakers in Saint-Émilion from father to son, fell in love with a small plot in Lalande-de-Pomerol, located just across the road from their property. They decided to create a unique wine there, Lucaniacus. Its name pays tribute to the villa that the poet Ausonius dedicated to his wife, Lucania.
The site is steeped in history: Gallo-Roman remains were discovered there, now on display at the Musée d'Aquitaine and the Louvre, and the label is inspired by a mosaic found on the premises. On these deep gravel soils, the family made a bold choice for the appellation: a majority of Cabernet Franc complemented by Merlot, and long aging in new barrels.
The result is a powerful and concentrated red, which remains silky and elegant on the palate. In an appellation where Merlot largely dominates, the Cabernet Franc provides unique freshness and depth here. When young, this wine will benefit from being decanted for one to two hours before serving; with a few years in the cellar, it will refine even further. At the table, it pairs well with grilled red meat, game, or a slow-cooked dish.
