Rioja, in northern Spain, is arguably the leading wine region in Spain. It is best known for its berry scented, barrel aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha. Rioja has three official subregions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Although it is rare to find wines labelled with these names, it is very common to hear aficionados talk about the greatness of Rioja Alta or Rioja Alavesa.
