Rioja, in northern Spain, is arguably the leading wine region in Spain. It is best known for its berry scented, barrel aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha. Rioja has three official subregions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Although it is rare to find wines labelled with these names, it is very common to hear aficionados talk about the greatness of Rioja Alta or Rioja Alavesa. And while most of the great wines of Rioja do come from these two areas, you can still find incredible wines from Rioja Baja, depending on the producer and where the vineyard sits in the region.
