Made in China takes on a whole new meaning with Mulando. Fang Wang, a Chinese-born German businesswoman, decided to name her wine company after the famed warrior Mulan (yes, like the Disney movie). Similarly to this folklorish heroine, Fang Wang is a woman in a man’s world, doing what she can to carve her place in the Chinese and international wine market. The Expedition (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a tightrope artist, nimbly balancing acidity, bitterness and sweetness. This wine boasts a melodic arrangement of blackberry, plums and red berries, punctuated by phrases of fresh herbs and oak. A perfect fit for a vegetable couscous or a leg of lamb.

I opened this bottle on a rainy evening and it was just what I needed. Rich blackcurrant and plum on the nose, followed by earthy tannins and a touch of oak. It has structure and depth without being overpowering. I grilled a ribeye and the pairing was spot-on. I’d easily serve this at a dinner party.
