History

In the heart of the heroic Banyuls vineyard, clinging to the schist slopes that descend toward the Mediterranean, the Cave de l’Étoile presents an exceptional 1971 vintage. From old vines carefully tended by hand on these steep terraces, this Banyuls Traditionnel illustrates the union of a rugged terroir and the patience of the winemakers.

Vinification

Made predominantly from Grenache Noir, complemented by Grenache Gris and Carignan, it is crafted using the traditional method: destemmed harvest, fortification (mutage) on the skins, followed by prolonged maceration to express the power of the fruit. After this stage, it aged for decades in casks and century-old barrels, developing the unique complexity characteristic of great oxidative Banyuls.

Tasting Notes

Tile-colored robe with mahogany highlights announces a rich bouquet of dried figs, toasted walnuts, coffee, and gentle spices, accented by a touch of noble rancio. On the palate, concentration is balanced with beautiful freshness, offering a broad texture and a long, deep, harmonious finish. Served around 16 °C, it elevates both game in sauce and dark chocolate desserts or a dried fruit tart. A collector’s bottle, perfect to give or enjoy for a special occasion.
