History

A legendary vintage for lovers of oxidative wines, the 1978 Banyuls Traditionnel from the Cave de l’Étoile embodies a leap into “the magic of rancio.” Founded in 1921, the cooperative cellar preserves a treasure of old vintages, jealously protected in its “vault” of century-old casks and barrels. The 1978 stands as a centerpiece of this collection, a symbol of patience and craftsmanship.

Vinification

Made from Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, and Carignan rooted on the steep schist slopes overlooking the Mediterranean. The grapes were destemmed and then fortified (mutage) on the skins, with extended maceration under alcohol. Oxidative aging, lasting several decades, took place in old barrels, demi-muids, and casks, before reconditioning and bottling in January 2016. This process, marked by the loss of a significant portion of the volume (the “angel’s share”), enhanced its concentration and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Amber-colored robe with mahogany highlights precedes a nose of rare intensity: walnut, curry, cocoa, dried fruits, with the famous rancio that defines great Banyuls. The palate, suave and deep, unfolds notes of mocha, fig, and oriental spices, carried by astonishing freshness. A wine of emotion, ideal with intense dark chocolate, walnut tart, or simply as a contemplative piece. To give or to collect: a true liquid legend.
