Tabali Payen 2018 comes from the Talinay vineyard, located at an altitude of 150 m and 12 km from the Pacific, combining a large majority of Syrah (93%) with a touch of Cabernet Franc (7%). This limestone terroir of marine origin, unique in Chile, benefits from a cool coastal climate where ocean breezes moderate temperatures and preserve the balance of the fruit. Hand-harvested on March 27, rigorously selected before precise vinification, 30% is fermented as whole berries in barrels. The 18-month aging in barrels, 90% of which are new, brings depth and structure. Established in 2002 in Limarí, on the edge of the Atacama Desert, Tabalí is a pioneer of viticulture in this valley. The estate crafts wines that span Chile from east to west within the same valley, from its high-altitude Roca Madre vineyard in the Andes to the coastal Talinay vineyards near the Pacific Ocean. The range is crafted by winemaker Felipe Muller and viticulturist Hector Rojas.
On the nose, intense aromas of black cherry, blueberry, and violet, enhanced by black pepper, smoky, and spicy notes. On the palate, ample and structured, with velvety tannins, supported by a beautiful freshness, with a long, complex, and harmonious finish. It pairs well with a slow-roasted shoulder of lamb with sweet spices or a grilled rib of beef with herb jus. Aging potential of 10 years.
Chile
Coquimbo is the northernmost wine region in Chile, with barely 2,000 hectares of vineyards, yet what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character and singularity. Its three sub-regions, Limarí, Elqui and Choapa, offer a remarkable diversity of terroirs.
In the Limarí Valley, where vines have been cultivated for over 400 years, the limestone soils, low rainfall and a regular morning marine fog giving way to warm sunny afternoons all combine to give the wines a rare and distinctive minerality. Further north, the Elqui Valley, on the edge of the Atacama Desert, produces brilliant and intensely aromatic wines, particularly from Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, where the secret to successful viticulture at such extreme latitudes lies in altitude. The vineyards here receive levels of solar radiation far higher than any wine region in Europe, which translates directly into the vibrancy and intensity of the wines.
From the briny minerality of Limarí whites to the sun-drenched, concentrated reds of Elqui, Coquimbo stands out as one of the most fascinating wine regions in the New World, understated, uncompromising, and unmistakably its own.
