Tabali Vetas Blancas Malbec Cabernet Franc 2018 comes from the El Espinal vineyard, located at an altitude of 250 m and 24 km from the Pacific, combining 60% Malbec and 40% Cabernet Franc on an ancient alluvial terrace crossed by limestone veins. This cool coastal sector favors a slow ripening process that preserves freshness and natural acidity. Both grape varieties are harvested, vinified, and aged separately, with a 10-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation in small stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, followed by 14 months of aging in seasoned French barrels. Established in 2002 in Limarí, on the edge of the Atacama Desert, Tabalí is a pioneer of viticulture in this valley. The estate crafts wines that span Chile from east to west within the same valley, from its high-altitude Roca Madre vineyard in the Andes to the coastal Talinay vineyards near the Pacific Ocean. The range is crafted by winemaker Felipe Muller and viticulturist Hector Rojas.
On the nose, blueberries and cherries intertwined with delicate floral notes and spices. On the palate, balanced with a voluptuous texture and a good tannic structure. It pairs well with a duck breast with red fruits or a wild mushroom risotto. Serve between 16 and 18°C. Aging potential of 5 to 8 years.
Chile
Coquimbo is the northernmost wine area in Chile, with barely 2,000 hectares of vines. What the region lacks in size, it more than makes up for in character and individuality. Its three subregions, Limarí, Elqui and Choapa, offer a remarkable diversity of terroirs.
In the Limarí Valley, where vines have been grown for over 400 years, limestone soils, low rainfall and a morning sea fog regularly followed by a warm, sunny afternoon give the wines a rare and distinctive minerality. Further north, the Elqui Valley, at the gateway to the Atacama Desert, produces bright, intensely aromatic wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, where the secret to successful viticulture lies in altitude. The vineyards receive far higher levels of sunlight than any European wine region, which shows in the vibrancy and intensity of the wines.
From the saline minerality of Limarí whites to the sunny, concentrated reds of Elqui, Coquimbo stands out as one of the most fascinating wine regions of the New World: confidential, demanding and truly singular.
