Innocent Bystander Chardonnay 2021 comes from sites located in both the Upper Yarra and the valley floor, offering a combination of citrus freshness and riper stone fruit characters. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged for 9 months with 50% in oak barrels and 50% in stainless steel tanks on the lees. pH 3.15, total acidity 7.0 g/L, alcohol 13%. Innocent Bystander was founded in 2004 by Phil Sexton in the Yarra Valley, focusing on Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Selecting the finest vineyards, he aimed to create an all-encompassing wine destination complete with a renowned restaurant and boutique. The wines quickly became benchmarks in the Yarra Valley, embodying fruit brilliance, freshness, and delicacy, meticulously vinified using manual harvesting and natural yeasts. Since 2016, Brown Brothers has preserved the estate's founding style.
On the nose, fresh pear and lemon mingle with floral notes. On the palate, crisp and fresh with a beautiful amplitude. It pairs with grilled langoustines or a citrus quinoa salad. Serve between 7 and 9°C. Aging potential of 5 years and beyond.
Australia
The Yarra Valley is a well-respected Australian wine region that occupies the eastern half of the Port Phillip viticultural zone, in the diminutive state of Victoria. At complete odds with the usual, hot and dry Shiraz-growing image of Australia, Yarra Valley is best known for its bright, complex wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
A beautifully balanced Yarra Valley Chardonnay, showing lemon curd, green apple, and a soft, creamy texture. The oak is restrained, supporting rather than dominating the fruit.
The 2021 Chardonnay from Innocent Bystander is crisp and lively, with citrus blossom, white nectarine, and a hint of nougat. Lightly oaked, it’s vibrant and clean with a refreshing mineral edge.
I usually don’t go for Chardonnay, but this one changed my mind. No heavy butter or over-the-top oak—just clean, crisp fruit with a touch of richness. Very approachable and really well made.
