Gomez Cruzado
Nestled in the famous railway district of Haro, in the heart of Rioja, the Gomez Cruzado bodega is a true institution of Spanish wine. Founded in 1886, this house combines tradition and innovation to produce exceptional wines. Today, it stands out for its ability to remain faithful to its heritage while exploring modern approaches to magnify the terroir of Rioja.
A history rooted in tradition
The Gomez Cruzado bodega came into being thanks to the ambition of Ángel Gómez de Arteche, a Mexican nobleman who fell in love with Spanish wine lands. It quickly established itself as a reference in Rioja thanks to its expertise and the quality of its wines. In the 1900s, it was one of the first cellars in Haro to produce wines using Bordeaux-inspired techniques, favoring aging in oak barrels.
In 1916, the bodega changed hands to become the property of the Cruzado family. This transition gave it its current name and marked a new stage in its development, while maintaining its artisanal methods.
The terroir of Rioja Alta and Alavesa
Gomez Cruzado benefits from a privileged location in the heart of two Rioja sub-regions: Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. These lands, rich in geological diversity, offer ideal conditions for viticulture. The limestone and clay-limestone soils, combined with the Atlantic-influenced continental climate, give the grapes unique freshness and complexity.
The bodega works primarily with native grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano for reds, as well as Viura for whites. Each plot is cultivated with care, following an approach that respects the environment and the natural rhythm of the vine.
