Banyuls Traditionnel 1970, L'Etoile
Banyuls Traditionnel 1970, L'Etoile
History
An emblematic vintage, 1970 marks a historic milestone for the Cave de l’Étoile, the oldest cooperative in Banyuls. On the schist slopes swept by the Tramontane wind, the winemakers hand-crafted this Banyuls Traditionnel, faithful to the heritage of a heroic terroir where steep terraces meet the Mediterranean.
Vinification
Made from a blend dominated by Grenache Noir, complemented by Grenache Gris and Carignan, this vin doux naturel was produced by fortification (mutage) on the skins after prolonged maceration, concentrating color and body. Decades of oxidative aging in old casks and barrels shaped a rare complexity, with each year adding new aromatic layers.
Tasting Notes
Deep mahogany-colored robe precedes a sumptuous nose of candied fruits, walnut, leather, and cocoa, accented by elegant rancio. On the palate, the balance is captivating, with caressing sweetness, preserved freshness, and an endless finish featuring notes of mocha and gentle spices. Best served slightly chilled (16 °C) with intense dark chocolate, aged Comté, or to celebrate a symbolic anniversary. A cult vintage, cherished by both collectors and lovers of emotional wines.
