Dry or sweet Gewürztraminer: how to tell its style?
Gewürztraminer is probably one of the most recognizable white grape varieties in the world. With its aromas of lychee, rose, spices, and exotic fruits, it produces particularly expressive wines... to the point of causing confusion among many enthusiasts.
So, is Gewürztraminer dry or sweet?
The answer is: both! Although, in the collective imagination, it is often associated with sweet or off-dry wines.
It's not always easy to tell the difference... especially in Alsace, where the grape variety can take on several guises.
Gewürztraminer: a naturally exuberant grape variety
Gewürztraminer is an aromatic grape variety native to Alsace and Central Europe. Its name comes from the German "gewürz", which means "spicy".
It produces very fragrant and often rich wines, with a full texture and naturally low acidity. This combination can give an impression of sweetness even when the wine is technically dry.
Why does Gewürztraminer often seem sweet?
Gewürztraminer has a particularly intense aromatic profile. Lychee, rose, mango, candied fruits, sweet spices... all these aromas immediately give a gourmet and almost sweet sensation.
But that's not all: the grape variety also has a naturally round texture, with low acidity and often a high alcohol content. That's why some dry Gewürztraminers can seem sweet on the palate.
What's the difference between a dry, off-dry, or sweet Gewürztraminer?
It all depends on the residual sugar, i.e., the natural sugar from the grapes that remains after fermentation.
Here's a simple guide to understanding it:
-
Dry: less than 4 g of sugar per liter
-
Off-dry: between 4 and 12 g/L
-
Sweet: between 12 and 45 g/L
-
Luscious: over 45 g/L
But with Gewürztraminer, perception can sometimes be misleading: a technically dry wine can seem sweeter than a slightly sweet Riesling, simply because its aromatic profile is much more expressive.
Dry Gewürztraminer: rarer, but often more gastronomic
Contrary to popular belief, there are some very fine dry Gewürztraminers.
In this style, the grape variety retains its floral and exotic notes but with more tension and freshness.
These wines pair particularly well with:
-
Asian or Indian cuisine
-
spicy dishes
-
certain powerful, creamy, or slightly pungent cheeses
-
fragrant poultry
A well-balanced dry Gewürztraminer can be spectacular at the table.
Sweet Gewürztraminer: the most well-known style
This is the style that many spontaneously associate with the grape variety.
Thanks to its aromatic richness and high ripeness, Gewürztraminer is very well suited for:
-
late harvests
-
sweet wines
-
Sélections de Grains Nobles
Here, you'll find notes of candied fruits, honey, spices, and a more enveloping texture.
This style pairs perfectly with:
-
foie gras
-
sweet and savory cuisine
-
fruit desserts
-
powerful cheeses
Alsace: the kingdom of Gewürztraminer
Alsace remains the great benchmark region for Gewürztraminer.
Here you can find dry and gastronomic versions, as well as very accessible off-dry styles, or even sweet or luscious cuvées in great vintages.
It all depends on:
-
the terroir
-
the estate's style
-
the ripeness of the grapes
How to tell if a Gewürztraminer is dry or sweet?
A few clues can help you:
👉 Information on the label
Some producers of Alsatian wines indicate "dry", "off-dry", or "sweet".
The mentions "Vendanges Tardives" (Late Harvest) and "Sélection de Grains Nobles" always indicate a sweet wine.
👉 Alcohol content
As with Riesling, the alcohol content can provide a clue:
-
around 11% → often a little residual sugar
-
around 13-14% → often drier
👉 The estate's style
Some producers favor freshness, tension, and more digestible styles.
Others seek more richness, opulence, and indulgence.
Dry or sweet Gewürztraminer: which to choose?
The choice mainly depends on your taste and the occasion.
-
Dry Gewürztraminer → For an aromatic but gastronomic white, perfect with spicy or Asian cuisine.
-
Off-dry Gewürztraminer → For a balance between freshness and richness, very versatile at the table. The ideal wine for a chicken curry.
-
Sweet Gewürztraminer → For lovers of rich wines, ideal with foie gras or desserts.
If you like aromatic whites but are wary of overly sweet wines, a dry or off-dry Gewürztraminer can be an excellent entry point.
