McHenry Hohnen
McHenry Hohnen is an iconic vineyard located in the renowned wine-producing region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Founded on the principles of sustainable and organic viticulture, this family-run estate has distinguished itself by the exceptional quality of its wines and its commitment to the environment.
History of McHenry Hohnen
McHenry Hohnen was created by two Australian families passionate about wine: the McHenrys and the Hohnens. David Hohnen, co-founder of the estate and one of the most respected figures in the Australian wine industry, is especially known for founding Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay, two iconic wineries in Australia and New Zealand, respectively. Drawing on his experience, he decided to create McHenry Hohnen with his brother-in-law, Murray McHenry, in 2004. Their ambition was to produce wines that fully reflect the unique terroir of Margaret River, while respecting natural viticultural practices.
Terroir and Vineyards
McHenry Hohnen is located in one of Australia’s most prized wine regions, Margaret River, known for its climate that favors the production of high-quality wines, particularly varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The coastal region's climate is temperate, with hot summers and cool winters, offering ideal conditions for grape cultivation.
The McHenry Hohnen vineyards are planted on varied soils, including gravel, sand, and clay, allowing for a wide diversity of grape cultivation. The estate focuses primarily on Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot) and Rhône varietals (Syrah, Grenache, Marsanne), but also produces wines from lesser-known grapes such as Zinfandel.
Organic and Biodynamic Viticulture
One of McHenry Hohnen’s standout features is its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The estate avoids the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, opting instead for natural practices that promote biodiversity and soil health. Biodynamic treatments are used to strengthen the vines’ natural defenses, taking into account lunar cycles and the earth’s natural rhythms.
These organic and biodynamic methods are not only aimed at preserving the environment, but they also produce high-quality grapes with intense flavors and increased complexity. This holistic approach to viticulture is reflected in the estate’s wines, which are both authentic and in perfect harmony with their terroir.
Additionally, the estate’s use of renewable energy, reduction of carbon footprint, and initiatives to protect biodiversity in and around the vineyards are integral to its philosophy.
McHenry Hohnen Wines
McHenry Hohnen offers a varied range of wines. Among the most renowned is the Calgardup Brook Chardonnay. Sourced from seaside vineyards, it offers intense stone fruit aromas and mineral notes, with lovely tension and a creamy texture. The Burnside Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a fresh and lively white wine, marked by herbal and tropical fruit aromas, perfectly balanced by bright acidity, making it refreshing yet structured.
On the red wine side, the Hazel’s Vineyard Zinfandel stands out as a bold and spicy wine, showcasing a rare grape in Australia—Zinfandel—with its deep black fruit, pepper, and subtle vanilla aromas. Finally, the Rolling Stone is an emblematic Bordeaux-style blend of the estate, often considered one of its flagship wines. It captivates with its silky tannins and rich aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, and sweet spices, offering great elegance and depth.
McHenry Hohnen is a remarkable example of what can be achieved through a natural and sustainable approach to viticulture in a prestigious region like Margaret River. With meticulous attention to grape quality, responsible viticultural practices, and true respect for the land, this estate continues to produce wines praised by critics and wine lovers around the world.
